Food and wine

A good starting point to explore the culinary culture of the Alentejo is the “Rotas dos Sabores”. We would be happy to assist you in finding a variety of delectable offerings of the region as there are herbs such as thyme, basil, marjoram; vegetables such as tomatoes, eggplant, avocado; fruit such as oranges, pears, blackberries, lemon. Of course, the local olives can be mixed into a delicious tapenade. Finally, no Alentejo feast would be complete without sampling the local bread, meat, fish and wine. Most of the food served is local. These fresh seasonal offerings are prepared in a simple and natural style At our Recepcao, we can provide you with up to date information on local restaurants and eateries.

We have been surprised at the availability and quality of local produce. Many of the fruits and vegetables are from local noncommercial farms. Little goes to waste, and the livestock are fed the stalks and remnants.

For the local population, excess garden produce can be a source of extra household income. Every Friday there is a farmer’s market in Castelo de Vide, and private growers offer their products for sale. It is special to witness this local agricultural commerce.
